- James F. Vance Sr., 75, of Spencer, Ind., died Friday, April 16, 2004 at his residence. He was born July 1, 1928, in Midland Park, N.J., to James F. and Jenny (Amos) Vance. He grad-uated from Pompton Lakes High School in 1946, received his BS degree in mechanical engineering from Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., and in 1959 received his MS in mathematical statistics from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. He was also an Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Sally (McCarl) Vance, son James Vance Jr. and wife Shelley of Spencer, daughters Sandra Mann of Arizona, Karen Vance of Indianapolis, Susan Downs and husband, Allen, of Westfield, Ind., brother, Thomas Vance of Winslow, Ind., and sister, Eileen Kenny, Hamilton, N.J., and nine grandchildren.
Jim began his career at Foster-Wheeler, New York, N.Y., designing cooler towers. He then worked at ALCOA from 1952-60 in Edison, N.J., as manager of quality control in die-casting, 1960-61 at RCA, Somerville, N.J., as a semiconductor engineer, 61-67 at RCA at Mt. Top, Pa., where he was program manager for the Minute Man II project. Jim was the product reliability manager at Danbury, Conn., from 67-68 for National Semi Conductor. In 1968 he moved to Sullivan, Ind., to work at American Latex Corp. as General Manager and stayed until 1977. 1977-1981 he was the Founder/CEO of Vance Products in Spencer, Ind., a urological specialty device company. 1981-88 Jim was the Founder/CEO of Van-Tec Inc. in Spencer, developing, manufacturing and marketing of specialty medical products. In 1988, he started JFV Assoc., a proprietary business working as an advisor to startup companies. Jim continued to work at this until the time of his death. [2]
