- I am not certain whether the last 2 children were mothered by Elizabeth or Mary A., but in 1860 Arkansas Census, John L. is shown married to Mary A. with 2 other children, John J. and Mary J.
John L. did not move to Arkansas when his father and mother migrated, but was still in Tennessee in 1850, but shows up on the Arkansas Census for 1860 in Lawrence Co., Arkansas. John L. Vance enlisted in the Confederate Army at Pocohontas, Arkansas as a private in Company B, 21st Regiment, Arkansas Infantry, September 23, 1861. A Lt. Kelly is listed as the enlistee. Company muster roll sheets show he was paid for May and June 1862 and was present, signed by Capt. Mayfield. Same for July and August 1862, but on September and October sheets, signed by Capt. Martin, he was absent having been wounded at Corinth, Mississippi, 10-4-1862 in the battles of Corinth and Hatchie Bridge, Mississippi, October 3-5, 1862, neary Holly Springs, Mississippi. Consequently, he was pronounced dead in October 1862, having died from his wounds.
His will was probated in Lawrence County, Arkansas in 1863.
Frances M., son of John L. and Elizabeth (Walker) Vance and his wife Emilene Martha (Fore) Vance evidently were dead before the 1880 Arkansas census as the children are shown living with their grandfather, James D. Fore in Sharp County, Arkansas. They had moved from Lawrence County to Jackson County by 1870 census, as they were enumerated in the Jacksonport township of Jackson County.
Mary A. Vance, John L's widow, remarried 7-12-1866 to John Vanhooser in Lawrence County, Arkansas.
