DIARY: Rev. Pierre de Putron recorded on 10 March 1863: "The marriage o f th e P rince of Wales and the Princess Alexandra was here duly celebrate d by old a nd y oung. At seven o'clock...the whole population of Rodmell as cended the Dow n abov e Northease, where a magnificent bonfire had been pre pared...a display o f firew orks followed and soon all were thoroughly enjo ying themselves under th e encour aging influence of Mr John Saxby who ente red heartily into the amuseme nts of th e evening."

DIARY: Rev. Pierre de Putron, rector of Rodmell for 33 years in the ninet een t h century, recorded on 16 March 1881: "He [John] had been in failin g health f o r some time but still he attended to business and felt that h e would die in h ar ness. Although much enfeebled, he drove out...to inspec t the work of his far m . About the time mentioned [12.30pm] he lighted a c igar but almost immediate l y after, his head fell back and life was extinc t."
